AIM
The Dharmarth Dispensary aims at providing best medical facilities free of cost to those patients who cannot afford it. It is our humble wish and desire, that we get the opportunity to carry out meaningful & effective activities and provide help to all members of public, without any bias, whatsoever, based on religion, caste or creed.
THE NEED Moved by the inhuman conditions in many slum areas in Delhi, we decided to undertake humanitarian work, to the extent possible, to alleviate dire poverty & appalling conditions in some of these areas. The people in these areas are so poor that it is difficult for them to arrange for 2 meals a day also, let alone expensive medicines or treatments. The selection of area was also based, taking into account availability of limited financial resources, the feasibility of managing it. Keeping in view all aspects, we decided to finance & operate a dispensary within Vijay Vihar, a slum area in Delhi, with a population of 1.5 lacs. FOUNDATION Therefore, a dispensary was started on 27 Jan 2004 in a rented house in Vijay Vihar (A remote slum area of village Rithala beyond Rohini, New Delhi – 85) by Mr. Raj Pal Nagpal and Mr. Nirmal K. Jain. After 6 months of operations the idea came to expand this dispensary in their own land and bigger space. Serve Bhavantu Sukhina Sewa Samiti ( Regd.) Trust was formed and a total of 9 trustees joined hands in forming this trust. A plot of 300 sq. yds. was purchased, and the 12 rooms of Dharmarth Dispensary were constructed. TODAY What started as a small effort to provide medical care to those who cannot afford it, has now turned into multiple health care facilities, restoring health to over a HUNDRED patients everyday. The running expenses are being met by Mr. Nagpal and Mr. Jain. The dispensary has been hugely successful and its facilities and services which from the beginning are,and continue to be fully free, are used by the poor and needy of the remote slum area of Vijay Vihar, Budh Vihar Phase I & II, Rithala, Lal Dora, beyond Rohini. Approximate population of the area is 1.5 lacs. The Samiti plans to start new activities like opening a Maternity Centre on the first floor of the building, School giving free basic education to poor children, Vocational Training in stitching etc. to women so that they can earn their living and be independent, Old Age Home etc. in due course, as and when circumstances permit.
DIFFICULTIES FACED Since no financial aid is received form any corporate company or from any government bodies there is always scarcity of funds. Every year our balance sheet shows losses because no provision or income is generated to meet depreciation loss. Also we cannot hire adequate staff because of finance problems. No dedicated volunteers come forward to look after the activities of the dispensary. The Trustees are mainly self-employed, and are Small-Medium Enterprise owners, and hence have limited contacts with Corporate Houses or Government Bodies, who could support the Dispensary. The scope of activities that the Dispensary staff wishes to take up to reduce the misery, and uplift the people of the area is much more, but the lack of resources is proving to be a hindrance in this effort.
